China plans to increase its high-speed rail track mileage to approximately 60,000 kilometers by 2030, up from 48,000 kilometers at the end of 2024, according to data released by the country’s railway operator on Thursday.

China is looking to increase the length of its operating high-speed rail tracks to approximately 60,000 kilometers by 2030, a notable rise from the 48,000 km expected by the end of 2024, as reported by the country's railway operator on Thursday.

In conjunction with these developments, the operating mileage of China's railway network is anticipated to expand to 180,000 km by 2030, compared to 162,000 km at the end of 2024, according to the China State Railway Group Co., Ltd.

The railway authority also indicated that the fixed-asset investment in the railway sector is forecasted to reach 590 billion yuan in 2025, with about 2,600 km of new rail tracks expected to be operational during that year.

In 2024, China's railway network achieved a milestone by accommodating 4.08 billion passenger trips, representing a 10.8 percent increase over 2023. This number is projected to keep growing in 2025, potentially hitting 4.28 billion trips, as per the company's estimations.

Additionally, China's railways transported 3.99 billion tonnes of cargo last year, marking a year-on-year increase of 1.9 percent and continuing a growth trend for the past eight years.

In terms of investments, fixed-asset investment in the sector rose by 11.3 percent year-on-year in 2024, totaling 850.6 billion yuan, according to China Railway.

Official statistics also indicated that China-Europe freight trains made 19,000 trips in 2024, transporting 2.07 million twenty-foot equivalent unit containers of goods, which reflects a year-on-year increase of 10 percent and 9 percent, respectively.
