A symposium focused on the collaboration between China and ASEAN regarding AI development and governance took place on Monday in Phnom Penh, Cambodia's capital. The event sought to harness AI's potential to promote sustainable socio-economic growth within the region.
During his opening speech, Cambodian Permanent Deputy Prime Minister and Cabinet Minister Vongsey Vissoth highlighted the transformative impact of artificial intelligence on industries through enhanced productivity, positioning it as a new catalyst for growth and prosperity.
"We see AI as a tool not only for innovation, but also for inclusion and sustainability," he stated.
Vissoth indicated that the Cambodian government has identified digital technology as a vital priority, embedding technology as a core element of its development strategy. He emphasized the goal of ensuring that technological innovations, particularly AI, benefit all segments of society, ensuring that no one is left behind.
For ASEAN, he remarked that AI presents considerable opportunities for collaboration with China. He noted that China's Global AI Governance Initiative and its focus on responsible AI development are in harmony with ASEAN's vision for multilateral cooperation, highlighting a shared commitment to coordinated efforts that unite regional and global ambitions.
"Therefore, for ASEAN nations and China, AI offers unparalleled opportunities to leapfrog developmental barriers, tackle persistent challenges, and usher in a new age of prosperity, inclusiveness, and sustainability," he concluded.
Chinese Ambassador to Cambodia Wang Wenbin also addressed the attendees, affirming that China and ASEAN already enjoy a strong foundation, immense potential, and extensive opportunities for cooperation in AI.
