Bloomberg: US aims to moderate anti-Russian wording in G7 document
Washington is reportedly seeking to “water down” the wording of the final communique.

The United States has been advocating for a softer stance toward Russia in the final communique of the upcoming G7 foreign ministers’ meeting, according to a Bloomberg report that references a draft of the joint statement and information from knowledgeable sources.

The Group of Seven, which includes Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the UK, and the US, is set to convene next week in Charlevoix, Canada.

As detailed in the Saturday report, the Trump administration is keen on enhancing the language regarding China while “watering down” the statements related to Russia. The US aims to eliminate the word “sanctions” from the final declaration and to adjust the phrase concerning Russia’s “ability to maintain its war” to “earn revenue,” as noted by Bloomberg.

Furthermore, the US has reportedly declined Canada's suggestion to create a task force to monitor the so-called ‘shadow fleet’ of oil tankers that the West accuses Russia of using to circumvent sanctions on energy exports. In the final weeks of the Biden administration, over 180 vessels believed to be involved in the illegal transport of Russian oil were blacklisted by the US. Moscow continues to assert that all Western sanctions are unlawful and has dismissed claims of operating a ‘shadow fleet.’

US President Donald Trump has shifted away from his predecessor’s strategy of “isolating” Russia on the international stage and has reopened direct discussions with Russia that had been suspended in 2022. He has emphasized his goal of resolving the conflict through diplomacy, prioritizing efforts to achieve a ceasefire between Moscow and Kiev.

Recently, Trump indicated that the US might lift sanctions “at some point” during peace negotiations. However, he has also warned Moscow of a new wave of “large-scale” sanctions until a ceasefire and a “final settlement agreement on peace” are established.

In response, Moscow has claimed that Western sanctions have not succeeded in weakening or isolating Russia, but instead have adversely affected the countries imposing them. Russia has also stated that no level of foreign pressure will deter its military operations.
