'Black Myth: Wukong' turns into a sensation, surpassing 10 million sales
The Chinese video game "Black Myth: Wukong" has made a significant impact in the gaming industry, achieving sales of over 10 million copies across all platforms by 9 p.m. on Friday, just three days after its Tuesday morning release, according to an announcement from developer Game Science.
Hailed as China's initial venture into "Triple-A" game development, "Black Myth: Wukong" quickly climbed to the top of the "most-played games" chart on Steam shortly after its launch.
Game Science also reported that the game reached a peak of over 3 million simultaneous players on various platforms.
The video game is based on the renowned Chinese classic "Journey to the West," focusing on the narrative of a monk and his three followers, notably Sun Wukong, the fabled Monkey King celebrated for his magical prowess and playful antics.
Experts in the industry predict that the game will maintain robust sales moving forward.
According to projections from Goldman Sachs, "Black Myth: Wukong" could sell as many as 12 million copies on Steam alone, potentially generating upwards of 3 billion yuan (approximately $420 million). In the most optimistic forecasts, sales could approach 20 million units, generating a revenue of 5 billion yuan.
Triple-A games are typically characterized by significant investment in terms of money, time, and resources, and traditionally, this sector has been dominated by developers from countries like Japan, the U.S., and France.
Pan Helin, from the expert committee under the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, observed that the release of the game has stimulated spending in associated sectors and heightened interest in traditional Chinese culture.
"Black Myth: Wukong" is acclaimed for integrating rich cultural elements with contemporary gaming visuals, making a significant impact far beyond just the gaming sphere. The game's success has elevated the stock prices of certain companies and increased tourism in Shanxi Province in northern China, a principal filming location for the game.
While the game initially saw a predominantly Chinese audience, its appeal is swiftly growing on a global scale. Avid fans have even produced extensive guides to aid international players in grasping the rich cultural context of the story.
Yu Ranxing, co-founder of Game Science, noted, “We hope to show that Chinese games can also achieve world-class standards through our efforts.”
Yu also discussed how China’s gaming industry is experiencing diverse competition and significant growth, describing it as an "unprecedented opportunity."
Currently, China stands as the world's biggest gaming market, with its revenue exceeding 300 billion yuan in 2023.
A recent industry report highlighted that in the first half of 2024, domestic gaming revenue reached 147.3 billion yuan, an increase of 2.08 percent from the previous year, and user numbers in China have surged to a record 674 million.
