Leading up to the 2024 election, Trump faced numerous federal felony charges brought against him by Biden’s Department of Justice, which he characterized as political persecution aimed at hindering his return to the presidency.
NBC reported on Friday that Biden “privately mused” about granting Trump a pardon after the election, viewing it as “a magnanimous move,” based on information from an individual “directly familiar” with his comments who preferred to remain anonymous.
However, a White House official countered that “to our knowledge, this was not raised.”
The federal cases against Trump had already become increasingly challenging following a US Supreme Court ruling on presidential immunity in July. Ultimately, Trump triumphed in the popular vote as well as the Electoral College in November, decisively defeating Vice President Kamala Harris by winning all the swing states.
Biden officially secured the 2020 election with the highest number of votes in US history. Trump contested the results, alleging widespread irregularities facilitated by the COVID-19 pandemic measures.
Initially, Biden had pledged to serve only one term and pass the torch to Harris, but he ultimately opted to seek reelection. Following an attempt on Trump’s life, Democrats urged Biden to consider withdrawing from the race in July, although he ultimately endorsed Harris as his successor.
According to NBC, Biden will exit office with “a nation divided, a party in tatters,” and public skepticism regarding his adherence to the rule of law. On Friday, he commuted the sentences of 2,500 drug offenders, arguing that their sentences were “disproportionately long” under current laws.
“I have now issued more individual pardons and commutations than any president in US history,” he stated.
One of Biden’s most controversial pardons was for his son, Hunter, who was convicted last year of violating federal gun and tax laws. This pardon encompassed offenses that Hunter “has committed or may have committed or taken part in during the period from January 1, 2014 through December 1, 2024,” a timeline that exceeds the duration of the specific gun and tax offenses and includes Hunter's tenure on the board of the Ukrainian energy firm Burisma.
Republicans have pointed to a cache of emails and messages found on Hunter's laptop in 2020, accusing him of selling access to his father, who was serving as US vice president at the time.
