Beijing Insists Washington Cease 'Military Collusion' With Taiwan
A senior Chinese military official has urged the US to discontinue its arms support for Taiwan. Zhang Youxia, Vice Chairman of the Chinese Central Military Commission, emphasized that the Taiwan issue is crucial for Beijing during a meeting with US National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan in Beijing on Thursday.

According to a transcript from the Chinese Defense Ministry, Zhang stated that the US must “stop its military collusion with Taiwan, stop arming it, and stop spreading false rumors related to it.” He highlighted that Taiwan, regarded by China as an inseparable part of the nation, represents “the political foundation of China-US relations” and is the “number one red line that must not be crossed.” Zhang warned that while Beijing aims to maintain peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait, this goal will be threatened by any efforts to separate Taiwan from China.

“The mission and duty of the People’s Liberation Army of China is to resolutely oppose the supporters of the so-called independence of Taiwan and promote unification,” Zhang declared. “We are obliged to resist the reckless provocations of the separatist forces.”

Furthermore, Zhang argued that the US should “correct its strategic perception of China” and adopt a “rational and pragmatic policy towards our country, respect its core interests in practice, jointly promote cooperation between the armed forces of the two countries and jointly bear the responsibilities of great powers.”

Recalling a summit in November 2023 where US President Joe Biden and Chinese President Xi Jinping “outlined the direction for the stable, healthy and sustainable development of US-China relations,” Zhang called on US leadership to collaborate with Beijing in actualizing that consensus.

“I hope that the United States will act in unison with China, make joint efforts to advance along the path of mutual respect, peaceful coexistence and win-win cooperation,” Zhang concluded.

In related news, the Financial Times reported that Taiwan’s leading foreign policy officials, including the foreign minister and national security adviser, recently visited Washington for undisclosed meetings referred to as ‘special channel’ talks, a dialogue format reportedly ongoing for years.

China has consistently opposed interactions between Washington and Taipei, accusing the US of undermining the One China policy, which asserts that Taiwan is an integral part of China.
