Bannon was incarcerated for ignoring a subpoena issued by the congressional committee investigating the Capitol riot that occurred in 2021. Initially sentenced in October 2022 for contempt of Congress, he was granted bail while he appealed his conviction.
He departed the Federal Correctional Institution in Danbury, Connecticut, early Tuesday morning and was greeted by his daughter Maureen, as reported by CNN, citing sources. Bannon is anticipated to hold a news conference later in the day in New York and to resume his radio show on Tuesday, just a week ahead of the upcoming election.
Bannon, who hosts the 'War Room' podcast, has been an outspoken supporter of the former president, referring to himself as a “political prisoner of Joe Biden and the corrupt Biden establishment.”
He has committed to continuing to impact the presidential race from behind bars, asserting that “they’re going to do everything to steal this election.” He previously characterized the contempt proceedings as a “show trial.”
In May, a panel from a federal appeals court upheld Bannon’s convictions; however, he is now requesting that the full appeals court review his case.
In addition to these issues, the former White House adviser is facing further criminal charges in a New York state court, where he is accused of defrauding donors who contributed to a fundraising campaign for a wall along the US-Mexico border.
Bannon has pleaded not guilty to charges that include money laundering, conspiracy, and fraud, with a trial set to take place in December.
