The 2024 World Science and Technology Development Forum, organized by the China Association for Science and Technology (CAST), commenced in Beijing today. This event gathered international experts to foster high-quality development and enhance global scientific and cultural exchanges.

The 2024 World Science and Technology Development Forum, organized by the China Association for Science and Technology (CAST), commenced in Beijing today.

Under the theme "Science and Technology for the Future," the forum emphasized the importance of building a community with a shared future for humanity. It aligned itself with key strategic initiatives including the Global Development Initiative, the Global Security Initiative, and the Global Civilization Initiative. The gathering aimed to unite global thinkers to facilitate high-quality development and enhance international scientific and cultural exchange.

During the opening ceremony, Wan Gang, who is both the forum’s chairman and the president of CAST, presented the opening remarks. He outlined four key proposals aimed at nurturing deeper global collaboration and openness in fundamental research; fostering the healthy evolution of artificial intelligence; supporting the innovation and creativity of young scientific and technological talents; and enhancing openness and collaboration in the governance of global science and technology.

In his concluding remarks, Wan urged all stakeholders to embody the spirit of a shared future for humanity, to adhere to the principles of win-win cooperation and an open and inclusive outlook. He called for the sharing of knowledge and wisdom, the forging of consensus, and the joint provision of scientific and technological capabilities to address sustainable development challenges, all while working towards building a community with a shared future.

The main events of the Beijing forum will continue through Thursday, featuring six thematic sessions and three roundtable discussions, along with a variety of cultural exchange activities.

More than 350 participants from 33 countries and regions are expected to engage in discussions throughout the forum. This includes 14 laureates of the Nobel Prize, Turing Award, and Lasker Award; 27 leaders of international scientific organizations; 41 domestic and international academicians; and over 200 experts and scholars affiliated with prestigious universities, research institutions, and companies. The forum will wrap up on October 30.
