Zoo Berlin revealed the names of its baby panda twins on Friday: Meng Hao, meaning "beautiful dreams," and Meng Tian, which translates to "sweet dreams."

In keeping with Chinese tradition, the names reflect elements from their mother Meng Meng's name. The twin sisters, born on August 22, also received German nicknames: Leni and Lotti. Leni pays homage to Marlene Dietrich, the renowned actress born in Schoeneberg, while Lotti whimsically points to Charlottenburg, a nearby district.

According to Zoo and Tierpark Director Andreas Knieriem, the names were chosen through a thoughtful brainstorming process.

"So many names came in, and we formed a core team from the communications department to sort them out. Eventually, we realized that the names Leni and Lotti can easily find connections with Berliners," Knieriem stated.

Knieriem emphasized that the names symbolize cultural bridges established through collaborative conservation efforts, noting that "our panda twins have roots in both Chengdu and Berlin."

Berlin's Mayor Kai Wegner also underscored the importance of the pandas.

"The giant panda is not just a symbol of China-Germany relations but also a bridge for fostering deeper cooperation and exchange," he remarked, expressing pride that Zoo Berlin is the only zoo in Germany to house giant pandas.

The twin cubs were born following an artificial insemination procedure performed on March 26, after meticulous preparation by an international team of specialists.

Meng Meng, now 11 years old, came to Berlin from China in 2017. She made history in August 2019 when she gave birth to Germany's first-ever twin panda cubs, Meng Xiang and Meng Yuan.
