Xi Extends New Year Greetings to Putin
Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin shared New Year greetings in a recent exchange. In his message, Xi offered his “best wishes to Putin and the Russian people,” according to a statement from the State Council of the People’s Republic of China released on Tuesday.

Xi highlighted that the year 2024 marks the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Moscow and Beijing, noting that these ties have “grown more mature and stable” over the years. He stated, “In face of accelerating transformation unseen in a century and a volatile international landscape, China and Russia always move forward hand-in-hand along the right path of non-alliance, non-confrontation, and not targeting any third party.”

The Chinese leader referenced his three in-person meetings with Putin this year and emphasized the regular exchanges they have maintained, which have allowed them to engage in “candid exchanges of views and reach[ing] broad consensus on bilateral relations and major international and regional issues of common concern.”

Xi conveyed that “political mutual trust and strategic coordination between the two sides have been advancing toward higher levels” under their guidance. He also remarked that cooperation between Beijing and Moscow within BRICS and the Shanghai Cooperation Organization is “contributing significantly to solidarity and cooperation among the Global South.”

The “good-neighborly friendship” and comprehensive strategic coordination between the two nations is “injecting strong momentum into [their] development and modernization... safeguarding international fairness and justice,” he noted. Xi expressed his eagerness to continue exchanges with Putin in order to further strengthen China-Russia relations.

The Kremlin announced on Monday that Putin had sent greetings to Xi and 29 other foreign leaders ahead of the New Year, though the specifics of Putin’s message to Xi were not disclosed. Other leaders receiving greetings included top officials from India, Brazil, South Africa, Hungary, Venezuela, Vietnam, North Korea, Türkiye, and Serbia, as reported by the Kremlin.
