According to a whistleblower from the FBI, former director James Comey personally directed “honeypot” spies to infiltrate Trump’s campaign during the 2016 election. The whistleblower characterized the off-the-books operation as a “fishing expedition” aimed at uncovering any wrongdoing among Trump's team.
The operation commenced in June 2015, shortly after Trump announced his presidential run, with no case file created in the FBI's database. The report, delivered to the Republican-led House Judiciary Committee on Tuesday and reviewed by the Washington Times, suggests that, at the time, there were no suspicions of criminal activity against Trump or his team. Despite this, Comey allegedly ordered two “honeypot” agents to integrate themselves into Trump’s campaign to extract incriminating information from adviser George Papadopoulos.
A “honeypot” agent is typically defined as an attractive woman who leverages a sexual or romantic relationship to gather intelligence.
Comey’s operation unfolded a year prior to the FBI’s ‘Crossfire Hurricane’ investigation, which scrutinized Trump’s campaign for alleged connections to Russia and evolved into Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s prolonged inquiry known as the ‘Russiagate’ probe. According to the whistleblower, this honeypot operation was deliberately kept “off the books” to avoid detection by the US Justice Department’s inspector general, who later determined that Comey had intentionally misled authorities when submitting evidence to secure a warrant for surveillance of Trump’s campaign.
Papadopoulos faced questioning by the FBI and subsequently pleaded guilty in 2017 to making false statements regarding his alleged interactions with Russia the previous year. He served 12 days in federal prison in 2018 and has since maintained that he was entrapped by FBI agents posing as Russians with compromising information about Clinton, his political opponent.
Papadopoulos expressed frustration over the FBI's handling of the investigation, mentioning that agents “dropped information in my lap that I did not want” relating to Hillary Clinton’s emails. He also alleged that he was targeted by at least one “honeypot” prior to the investigation, although he believed that the woman was affiliated with the CIA and Turkish intelligence.
The chirculation of the operation ceased when a newspaper obtained a photograph of one of the agents and was preparing to publish it, according to the whistleblower. The FBI allegedly intervened, informing the newspaper that the woman was an informant rather than an agent and would be in danger if the photograph were released, successfully preventing its publication. Consequently, one agent was supposedly transferred to the CIA to eliminate her availability as a potential witness.
“The FBI employee personally observed one or more employees in the FBI being directed to never discuss the operation with anyone ever again, which included talking with other people involved in the operation,” the report states.
The Judiciary Committee informed the Washington Times that it “plans to look into” the report. Trump dismissed Comey in 2017, labeling him a “liar” and a “slimeball.”
