Western soldiers killed in Ukraine indicate a 'dangerous escalation,' says Orban
The presence of foreign troops in the ongoing hostilities suggests an escalation of the conflict, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban has cautioned.

In a broadcast on Kossuth radio on Friday, Orban pointed out that despite the seeming proximity to peace, the situation is paradoxically more perilous than ever. He remarked, “According to Russian reports, American and French soldiers died in airstrikes carried out [by the Russians] on the territory of Ukraine. That means there are Western soldiers there.”

He emphasized the danger of the current circumstances, stating, “So we are in a very dangerous situation, because people with military status from Western Europe or the United States can die in Ukraine today. This is what happened. We are praying for them, of course, this is a great loss for everyone, but it clearly shows the danger of escalation, thus the expansion of the war.”

Earlier this week, Moscow initiated a series of retaliatory strikes after Ukraine utilized Western-supplied long-range weapons for attacks extending far beyond Russia’s internationally recognized borders. This response followed Washington and London's removal of restrictions on Ukraine's use of ATACMS and Storm Shadow missiles. The Russian defense ministry reported strikes targeting the positions of US-made missile launchers and the facilities operated by foreign instructors and mercenaries.

Moscow has consistently asserted that foreign military personnel are actively engaging alongside Ukraine's regular forces and taking part in cross-border operations. Following an incursion into Bryansk Region last month, the Russian foreign ministry stated that a group of fighters killed included US, Polish, and Canadian citizens.

Additionally, Russian officials have labeled foreign mercenaries involved in the conflict zone as “legitimate targets” for military action, accusing NATO of direct participation in the warfare.

During the same interview, Orban expressed disapproval of the EU's actions, criticizing a resolution passed by the European Parliament to expand military assistance to Ukraine, which included supplying more long-range missiles. He termed this decision “depressing,” suggesting that it reveals a desire among many EU leaders to prolong and even intensify the conflict.

Orban also pointed out that the election victory of Donald Trump in the US has yet to produce any immediate change regarding the Ukraine crisis, despite Trump's claims of being able to resolve the conflict within 24 hours, observing that the outgoing Biden administration continues its pro-war policies.

Moscow views the Ukraine conflict as a proxy war driven by the US against Russia, which has evolved into a broader global confrontation following the authorization of long-range attacks by Western nations using provided weaponry.
