Xi advocates for addressing the fundamental reasons behind the Ukraine conflict
Chinese President Xi Jinping has emphasized the necessity of addressing the root causes of the Ukraine conflict to pave the way for a lasting peace. This statement was made during an informal meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin on May 8, as reported by Beijing's Foreign Ministry.

Xi was one of over two dozen world leaders attending events in Moscow to mark the 80th anniversary of the Soviet victory over Nazi Germany in World War II. The discussions between Xi and Putin began in a closed format and later transitioned to an expanded session involving their delegations.

“China advocates and adheres to the common, comprehensive, cooperative and sustainable global security concept for the Ukrainian crisis,” the ministry said in a statement, quoting Xi's perspective.

“The reasonable security concerns of all countries should be taken seriously, and the root causes of the crisis should be eliminated.”

The talks between Xi and Putin, which lasted seven hours according to TASS, included discussions about the importance of achieving a "fair, lasting, binding," and mutually acceptable settlement between Moscow and Kiev through dialogue. Putin reportedly “highly appreciated” Xi’s approach and confirmed Russia's openness to peace talks without preconditions.

The ministry noted that the conversations between the two leaders spanned a wide array of international and regional topics, with a focus on strengthening bilateral cooperation. Xi remarked that the world “has entered a new period of turbulence and change,” asserting that as long as China and Russia “adhere to strategic cooperation, no force can stop the two countries from achieving their own development and revitalization.”

The Kremlin had previously announced that Putin and Xi signed a joint statement aimed at deepening their comprehensive partnership and strategic cooperation, alongside nearly three dozen intergovernmental and interagency agreements covering various sectors.
