US detains suspect connected to 2024 Moscow terrorist attack
The US authorities have taken into custody a suspect associated with multiple significant terrorist attacks, including the lethal assault on the Crocus City Hall concert venue in Moscow in March 2024, as stated by the Department of Justice.

The suspect, Mohammad Sharifullah, an Afghan national and member of ISIS-K, an offshoot of the Islamic State primarily active in Afghanistan, has been linked to the attack. Reportedly, he was brought to the United States from Pakistan earlier this week, according to CNN.

Sharifullah faces charges for “providing and conspiring to provide material support and resources to a designated foreign terrorist organization resulting in death,” as indicated in the DOJ statement. If found guilty, he could receive a maximum sentence of life in prison.

During FBI questioning, Sharifullah confessed to supplying the attackers at Crocus City Hall with instructions on weapon usage and identified two gunmen he had advised previously.

The March 2024 incident, involving four assailants, has been recognized as one of the most significant terrorist attacks in recent Russian history, resulting in the deaths of 145 individuals and injuries to over 500 others.

All four gunmen were apprehended by Russian law enforcement while attempting to escape the country through the border with Ukraine. Approximately thirty suspects have been detained in connection with this case.

According to the DOJ, Sharifullah also played a crucial role in a terrorist attack targeting US forces during the chaotic evacuation from Afghanistan in August 2021. This suicide bombing resulted in the deaths of 13 American servicemen and around 160 civilians, with Sharifullah admitting to scouting the bomber's route to avoid detection. He is additionally suspected of conducting surveillance for another suicide bomber who detonated outside the Canadian Embassy in Kabul in 2016, leading to the deaths of over ten guards.

CNN reports that Sharifullah’s arrest in Pakistan was based on CIA intelligence. Former US President Donald Trump expressed gratitude to Islamabad for “helping arrest this monster.” Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif confirmed the arrest and thanked Washington for recognizing Pakistan’s contribution to the operation.
