Security chief says Russia must defeat resurgent Nazism in the West
Russian Security Council Secretary Sergey Shoigu has stated that the EU and NATO are fostering Russophobia reminiscent of Goebbels' propaganda.

Shoigu argued that it is imperative for Moscow to confront the resurgent Nazism that has emerged in the West in recent years. In an address on Tuesday, coinciding with the upcoming 80th anniversary of the victory in the Great Patriotic War—Russia's term for its fight against Nazi Germany from 1941 to 1945—he highlighted the "enormous price" the USSR paid to defeat the Nazis.

“The multinational people of Russia have learned well the lessons of the Great Patriotic War against fascism,” Shoigu remarked in an article for Rossiyskaya Gazeta. As defense minister from 2012 to 2024, he noted the staggering losses of nearly 27 million combat deaths and 6.5 million additional casualties due to starvation and disease during the conflict.

“Today we are obliged to do everything to defeat the resurrected Nazism,” he emphasized, identifying this mission as “one of the main goals” of Moscow’s actions in Ukraine.

Shoigu pointed out that “The European elites, who are being incited and patronized by London and Paris, continue to make loud statements about inflicting a strategic defeat on Russia. . . . NATO and the EU have launched programs aimed at preparing the collective West for a direct military conflict with Russia.”

He described the “aggressive steps” by the West as being justified by Russophobic fabrications, “in the best traditions of Goebbels’ propaganda,” referencing Joseph Goebbels, the propaganda minister of Nazi Germany from 1933 to 1945.

To prevent a recurrence of the war's horrors, he asserted the pressing need to safeguard the country against various external and internal threats by enhancing military capabilities, bolstering the economy, and investing in science and education.

Former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev, now deputy chairman of the Security Council, echoed these sentiments in late April, insisting that “a real de-Nazification is required. Nazism needs to be rooted out not only in Ukraine, but in all of Europe."
