The Virginia-based company, SAFE, which specializes in secure property designs, announced the $300 million project earlier this month. Located just outside Washington D.C., the fortress, named Aerie, is expected to accommodate 625 affluent individuals in times of global crisis.
This underground facility will include robotic medical suites, a luxurious indoor swimming pool, a bowling alley, a climbing wall, and gourmet dining options, but accessing this sanctuary comes at a steep price—an entry fee of $20 million per person.
“The whole reason Aerie came to be is that after building multimillion-dollar sanctuaries for our clients on their estates and superyachts, they still traveled away from their protected homes to locations with a lower level of protection,” said Al Corbi, founder and president of SAFE, in an interview with Forbes last week.
Aerie is designed to resemble a high-end resort, boasting numerous luxury amenities, including advanced medical centers where residents can receive treatment for health issues and access lifesaving therapies facilitated by AI technologies, along with a selection of “wellness programs.”
Naomi Corbi, director of SAFE’s medical preparedness, noted that at the doomsday residence, members will benefit from the privacy to “conduct business” while enclosed within “impenetrable” walls.
For security, most facilities—except the members’ club and its rooftop penthouse—are situated underground. To offer the illusion of being above ground, the bunker incorporates interactive walls, ceilings, and specialized lighting effects that create the semblance of an elevated setting, despite being deep underground.
Among its features, the suites include a hyperbaric chamber for concentrated oxygen, which is beneficial for low air quality situations. Additionally, there is an ice plunge room designed to enhance blood circulation and mental well-being, along with an IV therapy room to deliver essential nutrients.
As interest in doomsday shelters continues to rise among the wealthy elite, SAFE intends to expand its offerings to residential bunkers in all 50 US states, preparing for what it terms the “unthinkable.”
