US Announces Successful Test of Hypersonic Weapon
Days earlier, the Pentagon announced a significant defense advancement, marking the successful interception of an intermediate-range ballistic missile.

The US Department of Defense has confirmed a successful test of the hypersonic weapon system known as the Dark Eagle, a project being jointly developed by the Army and the Navy.

Both branches of the military plan to utilize the same hypersonic glider warhead, the C-HGB, which can be launched from either land or maritime platforms, including Zumwalt-class destroyers and Virginia-class submarines.

The latest test launch, conducted from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida and revealed by the Pentagon on Thursday, involved the Army’s variant, officially referred to as the Long-Range Hypersonic Weapon.

The previous test was carried out in June from the Hawaiian island of Kauai, as reported by the DoD. This new trial was significant in that it was the first to employ a Battery Operations Center and a Transporter Erector Launcher, key components of the Army’s ground-mobile platform for the booster missile.

The weapon boasts a range of 1,725 miles and can reach speeds exceeding 3,800 miles per hour, equivalent to Mach 5, classifying it as a hypersonic projectile.

Previously, the United States had committed not to develop the LRHW with this range under the now-defunct Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty, which prohibited both conventional and nuclear-capable surface-to-surface delivery systems within a specific range. The U.S. withdrew from the treaty in 2018.

The joint weapons program has experienced delays, with the Army indicating to Bloomberg in September 2023 that it would not meet its target to field the system by the end of FY2023.

On Wednesday, the Pentagon celebrated a noteworthy defense accomplishment, reporting that for the first time, the US Missile Defense Agency successfully intercepted an air-launched medium-range ballistic missile in Guam.
