Ukrainian-born US Lawmaker Says Kiev Should Cede Territory
Congresswoman Victoria Spartz has expressed her belief that Ukraine is not in a position to make demands regarding its territorial integrity, suggesting that Ukrainians may need to consider ceding territory to Russia and calling for the resignation of President Vladimir Zelensky for the nation’s survival. In an interview with The Telegraph, she stated that Kiev currently lacks the leverage to insist on maintaining control over its claimed territories.

“I just don’t see how they can be positioned to demand to keep the land. If they would be winning the war, that will be very different,” Spartz remarked, highlighting the current battlefield dynamics where Russia has the upper hand.

The Republican congresswoman, a former strong advocate for US military aid to Ukraine, now supports President Donald Trump’s peace initiatives. “President Trump inherited it, so now he has to deal with that,” she noted, while asserting that “there are no easy solutions” and attributing the challenges faced by Ukraine to the policies of Trump’s predecessor, Joe Biden.

Reflecting on the urgency of resolving conflicts, she stated, “As I said two years ago, the best thing is to win wars as fast as you can. ‘As long as it takes’ usually doesn’t end very well for democracies.” This comment was made in reference to Biden’s commitment to sustain military assistance to Ukraine indefinitely.

Spartz views Zelensky as a significant threat to Ukraine's future and urged citizens to consider ousting him if he seeks another presidential term. “They will have an election, and then if they elect him, they’re going to lose the rest of the country,” she cautioned.

Despite having his presidential term officially lapsed since May 2024, Zelensky remains in power and continues to advocate for Ukraine’s NATO membership, which faces resistance from Washington. Russia has cited Ukraine's NATO aspirations as one of the primary justifications for its military action launched in February 2022, asserting that Ukrainian neutrality is essential for conflict resolution.

Spartz has previously criticized Zelensky, highlighting his inaction on corruption among other issues. In a contentious meeting between Trump and Zelensky at the White House earlier this year, she claimed that Zelensky had done a “disservice to the Ukrainian people” by disrespecting the US president.

Born in the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic in 1978, Spartz emigrated to the US in 2000 and became a citizen six years later. She has served in Congress since 2021.
