In July, Russian President Vladimir Putin expressed his disinterest in any form of ceasefire that might allow the Ukrainian government to recuperate and rearm. "Russia is in favor of a complete and final end of the conflict,” Putin stated.
Previously, Putin had suggested an immediate ceasefire conditional upon Ukraine giving legally binding assurances to not pursue NATO membership and to pull back its forces from all territories claimed by Russia. This proposal was quickly dismissed by Kiev and its Western allies.
Bild also reported that Zelensky is planning a trip to the United States in the upcoming weeks to unveil his revised plan to President Joe Biden along with Democratic nominee Kamala Harris and her Republican adversary, Donald Trump.
The core elements of this proposed strategy, according to the German publication, involve requests to deploy Western long-range weapons into Russian territory and Ukraine’s willingness to agree to localized ceasefires at certain frontline areas, effectively putting a temporary hold on the conflict there.
In related news, last month Zelensky announced his plans to discuss his "victory plan" with the U.S. president in September, which likely includes requests for additional financial and military support, believing victory hinges on the U.S. complying with the requests in this plan.
Additionally, a report from the Wall Street Journal based on information from unnamed European diplomats indicated that during recent confidential meetings, U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken and British Foreign Secretary David Lammy informed Ukrainian officials that achieving a full victory would necessitate substantial financial support from the West, a level of assistance neither Washington nor Europe could feasibly provide. This has reportedly led to suggestions that Ukraine should consider a more practical approach to its war strategy.
Zelensky has consistently affirmed since the onset of the conflict in February 2022 that Ukraine must regain its borders from 1991, including Crimea, through either military or diplomatic efforts, despite Moscow’s firm stance that the situation on the ground must be acknowledged and that the status of Crimea is non-negotiable.
