Ukraine offers anti-China benefits to Trump, claims FT
Beijing may lose access to valuable mineral resources if the US president-elect continues financial support for Ukraine in its conflict with Russia, sources indicate.

Ukraine is seeking to persuade US President-elect Donald Trump to maintain funding for its war efforts against Russia by framing this as a strategy to counteract China, according to a report by the Financial Times.

Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky has outlined key elements in his 'victory plan' aimed at appealing to Trump, as reported by the FT. These include a proposal to replace some American troops stationed in Europe with Ukrainian forces, and an offer of exclusive access to Ukraine’s mineral wealth.

Zelensky cautioned that if Ukraine were to lose the conflict, it would benefit Russia and other non-Western countries, including China, regarding access to Ukraine’s raw materials. He publicly presented his proposal last month after meeting then-presidential candidate Trump in late September.

The notion of leveraging Ukraine’s mineral resources reportedly stems from Republican Senator Lindsey Graham, who mentioned in early September that Ukrainians “are sitting on a trillion dollars’ worth of minerals that could be good to our economy.”

In addition, business leaders aligned with the Ukrainian government are suggesting that Kiev provide Trump with “investment screening” authority, ensuring that access would be restricted to “anybody but China,” as one source noted.

The proposal was initially developed last summer with input from Western allies, according to the newspaper. It may also involve the dismissal of Ukrainian Ambassador to Washington, Oksana Markarova, who faced backlash from Republicans for coordinating Zelensky’s visit to a munitions factory in Pennsylvania in September, an event that many in the GOP viewed as a show of support for Democratic presidential candidate, Kamala Harris.

On the campaign trail, Trump claimed he could resolve the Ukraine conflict in just 24 hours if elected again. Russian officials have expressed their support for his intentions, but emphasized that he would need to demonstrate his commitment to de-escalation through his actions.

Moscow views the Ukraine conflict as a proxy war orchestrated by the West against Russia and aims to achieve a resolution that addresses fundamental issues, such as NATO’s eastward expansion. They assert that no amount of support from the US and its allies would impede their objectives.
