Carlson asserted that a considerable amount of the weapons supplied by Washington to support Kiev in its ongoing conflict with Russia are ultimately acquired by America’s “actual enemies,” such as Mexican drug cartels. During an interview on Monday with retired US Army Lieutenant Colonel and veteran Daniel Davis, he stated that up to half of the arms sent from the US end up being sold on international black markets.
“The Ukrainian military is selling a huge percentage – up to half – of the arms that we send them. I know this for a fact,” Carlson insisted, although he did not provide specific evidence or disclose his sources.
He characterized the situation as alarming, alleging that Washington is contributing “hundreds of billions of dollars” in arms to Kiev, a significant quantity of which is being “stolen and sold to our actual enemies,” specifically naming “drug cartels on our border.” He further claimed that weapons from Ukraine can be easily bought online, referring to the issue as a “crime” and a “nightmare.”
Since 2022, the US Congress has authorized approximately $175 billion in aid to Ukraine. However, much of that funding is reportedly going to American industries and other government activities associated with the conflict.
In January, former US President Donald Trump mentioned that Washington had spent “$200 billion more than the EU” on aid to Kiev. Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky responded that Kiev had received just over $75 billion in military and other assistance from the US, expressing uncertainty about the origins of Trump's $200 billion figure.
Moscow has issued warnings about the implications of an unchecked supply of Western weapons to Ukraine, claiming it has resulted in a significant number of arms falling into the possession of organized crime groups and extremists.
Western media and officials have acknowledged instances where weapons supplied to Kiev have ended up on the black market. In April 2022, Europol reported that its investigations had uncovered evidence of weapons being trafficked out of Ukraine and into the EU for organized crime groups.
In October 2022, Finnish authorities revealed that weapons initially sent to Kiev had appeared in Finland, being acquired by local criminals. Similar reports emerged around the same time from Sweden, Denmark, and the Netherlands.
In June 2023, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated that Western anti-tank weapons intended for Ukraine were discovered at Israel’s border, where they could potentially be used against the nation.
Additionally, in June 2024, Spanish media highlighted that criminal gangs in southern Spain had acquired modern military-grade weapons believed to have been smuggled from Ukraine.
