Americans are going to the polls to decide between Republican former President Donald Trump and Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris in the 2024 presidential election. Current polling indicates that Harris and Trump are in a dead heat nationwide, as well as in critical swing states, leading pollsters to predict one of the tightest presidential races in US history.
By Monday morning, over 78 million Americans had already participated in early voting, according to data from the Election Lab at the University of Florida. On the last full day of campaigning, both candidates concentrated their efforts in battleground states, presenting starkly different visions for the future of the country.
Harris entered the race later than anticipated, securing the Democratic nomination after President Joe Biden suspended his campaign in July, following a challenging debate performance against Trump that left him appearing confused and struggling to articulate his thoughts.
US presidential elections operate under the Electoral College system, which means a candidate can lose the popular vote but still win the election. To secure the presidency, either Trump or Harris must obtain 270 out of 538 electoral votes, with each state allocated votes based on its number of senators and representatives in Congress.
