In his interview with Fox News, Herzog emphasized that the US president is not pursuing a military takeover of Gaza and called for neighboring countries to propose alternative solutions.
”President Trump is due to meet with major, major Arab leaders, first and foremost, the king of Jordan and the president of Egypt, and I think also the crown prince of Saudi Arabia as well...They are partners that must be listened to, must be discussed with. We have to know their fields as well and see how we build a plan that is sustainable for the future,” Herzog stated.
Trump's vision includes transforming Gaza into what he describes as “the Riviera of the Middle East,” with displaced Palestinians first relocating to Jordan, Egypt, and other Arab nations before some are resettled in the newly developed area. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has shown support for the proposal, stating it’s the “first good idea” he has encountered regarding the region’s future.
Nonetheless, the initiative has faced significant opposition from key regional players. Jordan and Egypt have rejected the plan, cautioning that it could jeopardize delicate ceasefire negotiations and ongoing talks related to hostages with Hamas. The Arab League and Hamas have also dismissed the proposal, as have various global powers, including Germany, France, Brazil, Russia, and China, all of whom have condemned the idea of forced displacement.
Those against the plan argue that it would contravene international law, with human rights advocates labeling it as “ethnic cleansing.” Despite this criticism, Trump is reportedly moving forward with diplomatic discussions, aiming to gather input from Arab leaders to refine his strategy.
Currently, Israeli officials are in Qatar engaged in indirect negotiations with Hamas regarding a potential extension of the existing ceasefire and discussions surrounding future governance in Gaza. Following Israel’s exit from the Netzarim Corridor, movement between northern and southern Gaza has resumed, amplifying the urgency for a long-term resolution.
