US President Donald Trump has stated that the United States will take control of the Gaza Strip, pledging to rebuild the war-scarred territory and create economic opportunities for its future inhabitants. When questioned about the possibility of US troops being sent to Gaza, Trump asserted he would “do what is necessary.”
These comments came after Trump's meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at the White House. The US president emphasized his belief that Palestinians should be permanently resettled elsewhere, indicating that the US would “take over” Gaza and lead the efforts to clear the devastation resulting from 15 months of conflict between Israel and Hamas.
“The US will take over the Gaza Strip. And we will do a job with it, too. We’ll own it and be responsible for dismantling all of the dangerous unexploded bombs and other weapons on the site,” Trump stated, pledging to “level the site and get rid of the destroyed buildings.”
When pressed for clarification on what “takeover” entails, Trump described a vision of a “long-term ownership position” intended to bring about “great stability” to the Middle East as a whole. “Everybody I’ve spoken to loves the idea of the United States owning that piece of land, developing it, and creating thousands of jobs,” he claimed.
Trump did not dismiss the possibility of deploying US troops as part of his Gaza development initiative. “We’ll do what is necessary. If it’s necessary, we’ll do that. We’re going to take over that place,” he stated.
According to the UN, roughly 92% of housing in the Gaza Strip has been either destroyed or severely damaged, with around 1.9 million people—over 90% of Gaza’s population—displaced since the conflict began in October 2023. The former real estate mogul has frequently referred to Gaza as a “demolition site” in recent remarks.
In response to inquiries about who would inhabit Gaza post-US takeover and redevelopment, and the possibility of Palestinian return, Trump replied: “I envision… the world’s people living there. I think the potential in the Gaza Strip is unbelievable. And I think the entire world, representatives from all over the world, will be there and they’ll live there… Palestinians also,” he added. “I don’t want to be a wise guy. But the Riviera of the Middle East – this could be so magnificent.”
