Donald Trump has emerged victorious in the race for the White House against Kamala Harris, having gained a majority in several critical swing states. He announced his victory during a speech in Florida, where he addressed an enthusiastic crowd. Harris, who refrained from speaking to her supporters on election night, ultimately conceded on Wednesday.
Trump achieved victories in five battleground states: Georgia, Wisconsin, Michigan, North Carolina, and Pennsylvania, and he is anticipated to win additional states in Arizona and Nevada. This has led him to accumulate at least 292 electoral college votes, while Harris has 224, firmly exceeding the necessary threshold of 270. The results mark a significant shift from the 2020 election, when Trump lost Georgia, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin to Joe Biden.
While addressing his supporters at the Palm Beach County Convention Center in Florida, Trump vowed to “turn our country into something very special.” Many world leaders have sent their congratulations to the Republican, with messages flooding in from across the globe.
On election night, Harris canceled a scheduled address to her supporters at Howard University in Washington DC but later provided a concession speech on Wednesday, assuring a “peaceful transfer of power.”
Harris entered the race late, securing the Democratic nomination after President Joe Biden withdrew from the contest in July following a poor debate performance against Trump, which left him appearing confused and struggling to complete his sentences.
The U.S. presidential elections operate under the Electoral College system, which means a candidate can win the presidency without winning the popular vote. To win, either Trump or Harris needed to secure 270 out of the 538 electoral college votes, with each state allocated a specific number based on its congressional representation.
According to data from the Election Lab at the University of Florida, over 158.5 million Americans participated in the election, with nearly 86 million voting early, either in person or by mail. For the first time in modern history, self-identified independents outnumbered Democrats at the polls, and they were tied with Republicans, each representing 34% of the electorate, as noted by exit polling data from Edison Research.
