Pro-Ukraine self-proclaimed Trump assassin cautions of impending civil war
In a jailhouse letter, the alleged gunman claimed that a victory for the Republican would spell “the end of democracy.”

The pro-Ukraine activist accused of plotting to assassinate Donald Trump in Florida has cautioned that the former president's reelection would lead the United States into a “civil war.” Ryan Wesley Routh, the suspect, has also previously offered a reward for anyone willing to “complete the job” and kill Trump.

In a letter sent from his Miami jail cell over the weekend, Routh expressed to the Palm Beach Post that he views the upcoming election as an opportunity for America to “choose democracy over a dictator.” He warned that a Trump victory against Kamala Harris would signal “the end of democracy and the beginnings of a civil war.”

“Will Palm Beach County hand the keys to our nation to the Trumps for the next century or more? How does Palm Beach view its neighbor?” he questioned the newspaper.

The letter was signed “Trump Alleged Shooter Ryan W. Routh” and was verified as genuine by Routh’s daughter.

Routh was arrested in September after US Secret Service agents discovered him aiming a rifle at Trump while the former president was on his golf course in West Palm Beach. The 58-year-old faces charges of attempting to assassinate a presidential candidate, assaulting a law enforcement officer, and unlawful firearm possession. He is currently awaiting trial.

A convicted felon, Routh had previously made an unsuccessful attempt to join the Ukrainian military in 2022. Following that, he sought to recruit former Afghan commandos to fight for Ukraine against Russia.

In a letter submitted to law enforcement in September prior to his assassination attempt, Routh expressed regret over not being able to kill Trump. “This was an assassination attempt on Donald Trump but I failed you,” he stated. “I tried my best and gave it all the gumption I could muster. It is up to you now to finish the job; and I will offer $150,000 to whomever can complete the job.”

Two weeks prior to his letter to the Palm Beach Post, prosecutors had alerted that Routh would likely reach out to the media.

Routh’s trial is slated to begin later this month. If found guilty, he could face a maximum sentence of life in prison.

In addition to his encounter with Routh, Trump narrowly escaped a similar fate at a campaign rally in Pennsylvania in July, where a bullet fired from about 150 meters away grazed his ear. The shooter, identified as Thomas Matthew Crooks, fired from an unprotected rooftop that the Secret Service had somehow overlooked. Crooks killed one rally attendee and injured two others before being shot dead by a sniper.
