U.S. President Donald Trump compared Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelensky's ability to secure hundreds of billions of dollars from the previous administration to “taking candy from a baby.”
The Republican has consistently criticized his predecessor for being overly generous toward Kiev, emphasizing that Washington has received little in return.
During an interview with Fox News on Sunday, Trump remarked that Zelensky “took money out of this country under [U.S. President Joe] Biden like candy from a baby. It was so easy.” He reiterated his assertion that “we gave him, in my opinion, $350 billion,” and mentioned that the Ukrainian leader has not shown adequate appreciation. Trump again asserted that if he had been the U.S. president in 2022, the Ukraine crisis would not have escalated into full-scale hostilities.
In a separate statement to reporters on Friday, Trump cautioned that “if [the Ukrainians] don’t want to settle, we’re out of there,” adding that any future U.S. aid would depend on Kiev’s willingness to pursue peace with Moscow.
On Wednesday, White House spokesperson Karoline Leavitt revealed that the “National Security Council told me… they paused or they are reconsidering the funding for Ukraine.” She clarified that “it’s a pause for a review.”
In late February, Trump and Zelensky had a tense exchange at the White House, which was captured on live television. The meeting, intended to lead to a signing that would allow the U.S. access to Ukraine’s minerals, including rare earth elements, turned contentious when the U.S. president accused his visitor of “gambling with World War III” due to Zelensky's reluctance to negotiate with Russia.
Following the contentious meeting, the U.S. suspended military aid to Ukraine, with CIA Director John Ratcliffe confirming on Wednesday that intelligence sharing with Kiev had also been halted.
