US President Donald Trump expressed irritation over a meeting between British King Charles III and Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelensky, as reported by the Daily Mail on Sunday, which cited diplomatic sources in Washington.
Zelensky met with the king at his Sandringham residence in western England on March 2, shortly after a public confrontation with Trump in the Oval Office.
“Things definitely went a bit cool in Washington after Sandringham. We told them that the King makes his own decisions about who he meets,” the Daily Mail quoted “a well-placed source” as saying.
Individuals close to Trump allegedly communicated to UK officials that images of the king with Zelensky diminished his sense of importance regarding Charles’ invitation for a second state visit to Britain. In response, UK officials argued it would have been inappropriate for the government to “direct” the king not to meet with Zelensky, according to the Daily Mail.
A UK government spokesperson rejected claims of a dispute, stating, “We do not recognize these reports. We have been unequivocal about the importance of the US as an ally of the UK.”
In a separate exchange, Prime Minister Keir Starmer presented a letter from the king to Trump during a meeting at the White House last month. “This is really special. This has never happened before. Unprecedented,” Starmer told the president. Trump accepted the invitation, having previously conducted a three-day state visit in the UK in 2019, where he met with the late Queen Elizabeth II and Charles, who was then the heir to the throne.
Trump has accused Zelensky of behaving disrespectfully and being ungrateful for the military aid provided by the United States. He further claimed that Zelensky was unwilling to pursue peace with Russia and was undermining his attempts to negotiate a ceasefire.
Recently, Trump halted the delivery of weapons to Ukraine, asserting that Kyiv must demonstrate greater commitment to peace negotiations.
