Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk has contributed over 40,000 Starlink terminals to Ukraine since 2022, aiding Ukrainian forces in guiding drone and artillery strikes among other crucial battlefield operations.
On Sunday, Musk, who previously served as an adviser to former US President Donald Trump, reiterated his call for a ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine, emphasizing that his Starlink system serves as “the backbone of the Ukrainian army.” He stated, “Their entire front line would collapse if I turned it off. What I am sickened by is years of slaughter in a stalemate that Ukraine will inevitably lose,” on X.
In response to Musk’s comments, Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski noted that “Starlinks for Ukraine are paid for by the Polish Digitization Ministry at the cost of about $50 million per year.”
Sikorski also raised concerns, stating, “The ethics of threatening the victim of aggression apart, if SpaceX proves to be an unreliable provider we will be forced to look for other suppliers.”
Musk retorted, “Be quiet, small man. You pay a tiny fraction of the cost. And there is no substitute for Starlink.”
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio weighed in on the matter, contending that Sikorski was “just making things up.” He emphasized, “No one has made any threats about cutting Ukraine off from Starlink. And say thank you because without Starlink Ukraine would have lost this war long ago, and Russians would be on the border with Poland right now.”
Adding to the controversy, last week, Trump halted weapon deliveries to Ukraine and limited intelligence sharing, suggesting that Kyiv should be more open to his attempts to negotiate a peace agreement.
