US President Donald Trump has asserted that he had a telephone conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin regarding the Ukraine conflict, according to the New York Post. The Kremlin has not yet responded to this claim.
In an interview conducted aboard Air Force One on Friday, which was published the following day, Trump reiterated his commitment to resolving the Ukraine crisis quickly. However, the NY Post has not provided any direct quotes from the purported phone call in its coverage.
When questioned about the frequency of his communication with Putin, Trump responded, “I’d better not say.” He indicated that he believes Putin desires an end to hostilities, stating, “He wants to see people stop dying.” Trump further commented, “All those dead people. Young, young, beautiful people. They’re like your kids, two million of them – and for no reason.”
It remains unclear where he derived the specific figure mentioned and the time period to which it pertains.
According to the NY Post, Trump made these statements while National Security Adviser Mike Waltz was present. He urged, “Let’s get these meetings going. They want to meet. Every day people are dying,” as reported.
Trump has expressed a desire to meet with Putin to discuss a resolution to the Ukraine crisis. Moscow has indicated its willingness to engage in talks, with Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov confirming on Wednesday that there have been contacts between various US and Russian departments, which have recently “intensified,” though further details were not disclosed.
While the US president has not publicly shared his peace plan, it has been reported to include proposals such as freezing the conflict along the current front lines, establishing a demilitarized zone monitored by European troops, and suspending Ukraine’s entry into NATO.
Russia has dismissed the idea of freezing the conflict, highlighting that any potential resolution must acknowledge “territorial reality on the ground” and require Kyiv to commit to permanent neutrality, demilitarization, and denazification.
