US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping may hold a meeting as soon as April to discuss the escalating trade war and other bilateral concerns, according to a report from the South China Morning Post, which cites diplomatic sources.
The initial meeting might occur in China, though the exact location is still being negotiated. Trump has reportedly expressed interest in inviting Xi to his Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida, reminiscent of their meeting in 2017. However, Chinese officials prefer a more formal venue, either in Beijing or Washington, DC, to emphasize the importance of the discussions.
Since taking office on January 20, Trump has increased tariffs on all Chinese imports from 10% to 20%, in addition to pre-existing duties on numerous products, citing the need to protect American interests and address trade imbalances. Key sectors impacted include steel, aluminum, and various consumer goods.
In retaliation, China has enacted tariffs ranging from 10% to 15% on US agricultural products and energy commodities. The Chinese government has openly criticized Washington's approach, with Foreign Minister Wang Yi stating that such policies are bringing the world back to the “law of the jungle.”
In February, Trump hinted that a new trade agreement with China might be possible and noted the possibility of Xi visiting the United States, although no specific timeline was mentioned.
The trade tensions between the US and China first emerged during Trump’s initial term. In 2018, he implemented tariffs on Chinese goods, citing unfair trade practices and intellectual property theft. Beijing responded with its own measures, leading to a cycle of actions that disrupted global markets and supply chains.
