On Tuesday, US President Donald Trump declared that he would raise tariffs on Canadian imports, increasing steel and aluminum tariffs to 50%. He reiterated his belief that the only solution to the ongoing tariff dispute is for Canada to become the “cherished” 51st state of the US.
Trump shared the announcement via a post on his platform, Truth Social, explaining that the tariff increase is a reaction to a 25% retaliatory surcharge on electricity exports to the US that Ontario, Canada’s most populous province, imposed on Monday.
“I have instructed my Secretary of Commerce to add an ADDITIONAL 25% Tariff, to 50%, on all STEEL and ALUMINUM COMING INTO THE UNITED STATES FROM CANADA, ONE OF THE HIGHEST TARIFFING NATIONS ANYWHERE IN THE WORLD,” Trump wrote, stating that this increase would take effect on Wednesday.
The president also urged Canada to eliminate what he labeled the “anti-american farmer tariff of 250% to 390% on various US dairy products,” alongside other “egregious” levies. He warned that failure to comply would lead to further actions, specifically targeting Canadian car production with measures likely to “essentially, permanently shut down the automobile manufacturing business.”
Earlier in February, Trump had implemented 25% tariffs on Canada but had postponed them for a month until last Tuesday. Exemptions were provided to Canadian automakers and goods covered by the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement until April. In response, Ottawa imposed tariffs on $30 billion worth of American products, with additional duties totaling $125 billion expected next month.
Trump reiterated his assertion that the US has been “subsidizing” Canada by over $200 billion annually but suggested that Canada joining the United States as “our cherished Fifty First State” would be the optimal resolution to the unresolved issues between the two countries, benefiting both sides significantly.
Since December 2024, Trump and his close allies have consistently voiced support for the idea of annexing Canada, despite its rejection by Canadian leaders and the populace. A recent YouGov poll indicated that around 77% of Canadians firmly oppose annexation, with only about 15% in favor.
Incoming Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has committed to fighting and winning the trade war with Washington, acknowledging that “this victory will not be easy.” Carney also dismissed the notion of ceding sovereignty to the US, declaring on Sunday that “Canada never, ever will be part of America in any way, shape, or form.”
