US President Donald Trump expressed admiration for Vice President J.D. Vance’s composure during a heated meeting with Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky, according to unnamed administration officials cited by the Wall Street Journal. The two leaders met in the Oval Office on Friday, where they were expected to celebrate the signing of a minerals deal between Washington and Kiev.

Following the confrontation, the WSJ referred to Vance as a “MAGA champion” in an article published on Saturday.

Vance remained mostly quiet as Trump and Zelensky responded to questions. However, when a reporter inquired whether Trump aligned with Russian President Vladimir Putin, Vance interrupted to commend Trump’s diplomatic initiatives while criticizing the Biden administration's previous policies. This prompted a spirited back-and-forth with Zelensky.

During the discussion, Vance addressed Ukraine’s difficulties in recruiting additional troops, asserting that Zelensky should be “thanking” Trump for his attempts to mediate the conflict. He also took aim at Zelensky's recent public appearances showcasing the war’s devastation, accusing him of staging “propaganda tours” and characterizing him as “disrespectful.” As a result of the clash, the day's events were curtailed.

In response to the confrontation, Trump reportedly remarked to White House staff that his former vice president “would have never done that.” Former Indiana Governor Mike Pence served as vice president during Trump’s initial term, but their political relationship soured following the January 2021 riots at the US Capitol, stemming from Pence’s refusal to meet Trump’s demands to obstruct Congress's certification of Joe Biden’s election victory.

Following the incident, the White House circulated supportive statements from Republican lawmakers and administration officials. “I was very proud of J.D. Vance, standing up for our country,” stated US Senator Lindsey Graham. Senator Mike Lee referred to Vance as the “GOAT,” meaning “greatest of all time.”

At 40 years old, Vance is the third-youngest vice president in US history. His relationship with Trump has transformed substantially since the president's first term. Initially a vocal critic of Trump, Vance opposed his bid for the presidency in 2016, labeling him “cultural heroin” for conservatives and questioning his integrity. Over time, Vance changed his position, securing Trump’s endorsement for his successful Senate campaign in 2022, which solidified his standing within Trump's inner circle.

Last month, during his inaugural foreign trip as vice president, Vance generated headlines with a speech at the Munich Security Conference, where he critiqued European leaders for censoring free speech and dismissing public concerns regarding migration.

Vance’s rapport with Trump remains robust, although the president has yet to indicate any intentions to name him as a potential successor. Trump told Fox News in February that he considers Vance “very capable” but emphasized that “there are a lot of very capable people.” Nevertheless, tech billionaire and Chief of the Department of Government Efficiency Elon Musk referred to Vance as “our future President” on Saturday.
