US Official Hints at Possible Need for Zelensky's Departure
National Security Advisor Mike Waltz expressed that Washington seeks a leader in Kiev capable of "dealing with the Russians and ending this war."

Waltz conveyed uncertainty regarding President Vladimir Zelensky's ability to lead Ukraine effectively at this critical moment, as he commented during an interview with CNN. He stated that the recent heated exchange involving Zelensky, President Donald Trump, and Vice President J.D. Vance suggested that Zelensky might not be prepared to initiate peace talks.

During a discussion with Dana Bash on Sunday, Waltz remarked, “it’s unclear whether President Zelensky, particularly after what we saw on Friday, is ready to transition Ukraine to an end to this war, and to negotiate and have to compromise.” He emphasized that Trump believes concessions from both Kiev and Moscow are essential to halt the ongoing conflict.

Waltz noted that during Trump's meeting with Zelensky on Friday, "it did not appear to us that [he] was ready to go to peace."

When a CNN host inquired whether the White House desired Zelensky's resignation, Waltz clarified the administration's position: “we need a leader that can deal with us, eventually deal with the Russians, and end this war.”

He added that “if it becomes apparent that President Zelensky’s either personal motivations or political motivations are divergent from ending the fighting in his country, then I think we have a real issue on our hands.”

In a Saturday interview with Breitbart Radio, Waltz likened Zelensky to an “ex-girlfriend that wants to argue everything that you said nine years ago, rather than moving the relationship forward.”

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, speaking to ABC News on Sunday, mentioned that he had not “had any contact with [Zelensky] since Friday.” He reaffirmed that the Trump administration aims to bring both Ukraine and Russia to the negotiating table, asserting that the president is the “only person on Earth who has any chance whatsoever” of achieving this goal.

“Don’t do anything to disrupt that, and that’s what Zelensky did unfortunately – he found every opportunity to try to Ukraine-splain on every issue,” Rubio recounted, referencing the previous Friday's confrontation at the White House.
