US President Donald Trump issued these pardons through an executive order in the Oval Office on Monday, shortly after his inauguration for a second term.
The presidential order states that he granted “a full, complete and unconditional pardon to all other individuals convicted of offenses related to events that occurred at or near the United States Capitol on January 6, 2021.” Additionally, he commuted the sentences of 14 other people. Trump remarked, “We hope that they come out tonight, frankly,” during his press briefing in the Oval Office.
He also directed the attorney general to drop “all pending indictments” pertaining to the riot, characterizing the pardons as an effort to address “a grave national injustice” and promote “national reconciliation.”
On January 6, 2021, a faction of Trump supporters breached security barriers and temporarily took control of the Capitol building, aiming to disrupt the certification of Joe Biden's victory in the 2020 presidential election. Some individuals among the mob were non-violent, while others engaged in clashes with law enforcement and caused property damage. One rioter, Ashli Babbitt, was shot and killed by police as she attempted to breach the Speaker’s Lobby.
Trump has consistently refused to acknowledge his defeat in the 2020 election, alleging that the voting process was fraudulent. He has referred to the January 6 defendants as patriots and hostages, claiming that their prosecution stemmed from political motivations.
In 2021, Democrats accused Trump of inciting the riot and subsequently impeached him based on his actions related to the event. Trump has rejected any allegations of misconduct, branding the accusations as a “witch hunt.”
