Trump criticizes Biden and Harris for disregarding fallen soldiers
The former president has taken aim at the White House for overlooking a ceremony dedicated to honoring troops who lost their lives during the US withdrawal from Afghanistan.

Donald Trump described the 2021 US pullout from Kabul as “gross incompetence” during a commemoration at Arlington National Cemetery for the 13 servicemen who died in the chaotic withdrawal. He also criticized President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris for their absence from the ceremony honoring the fallen soldiers.

The Abbey Gate attack resulted in the deaths of eleven marines, one soldier, and a Navy medic, along with 170 Afghan civilians. Responsibility for the August 26, 2021 bombing was claimed by the Islamic State (IS/ISIS) amid a frantic evacuation from Kabul's airport, just days after the Taliban seized control of Afghanistan.

“This is the third anniversary of the BOTCHED Afghanistan withdrawal, the most EMBARRASSING moment in the history of our Country,” Trump expressed on his Truth Social account.

He held Biden and Harris responsible for the “gross incompetence” that contributed to the deaths of the 13 troops and many civilians, leading to the US becoming “a laughing stock all over the World.”

The drone strike intended as retaliation for the Abbey Gate attack resulted in the deaths of ten innocent Afghan civilians, mostly children. The Taliban reportedly killed the mastermind of the suicide bombing in April 2023.

To date, no officials from the Biden administration or the US military have faced accountability for the failures in Afghanistan. The only officer who publicly criticized the withdrawal and sought accountability, US Marine Colonel Stuart Scheller, was arrested and removed from service.

At the commemoration, Trump honored the fallen by laying three wreaths at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, accompanied by family members of those who died.

Neither Biden nor Harris attended the ceremony at Arlington. The President's recent public engagement was at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago the previous week. Harris, however, released a written statement on the White House website, commending Biden for “the courageous and right decision to end America’s longest war.”

“On this solemn day, let us come together as one nation to honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice three years ago on behalf of the United States and our cherished freedoms. Our grateful nation mourns and salutes them,” the statement read. “In their memory, let us re-dedicate ourselves to the cause they gave their lives for: to protect and defend the greatest democracy on Earth, the United States of America.”

Biden has faced prior criticism for appearing to neglect fallen soldiers and their families. Notably, he was seen checking his watch during the arrival of the remains of servicemen at a Delaware air force base in August 2021.
