Syrian Negotiation Commission considers future ties with Russia
The Arab state should seek a constructive relationship with Moscow founded on mutual respect and shared interests, according to Anas Al-Abdah, the president of the Syrian Negotiation Commission, in an interview with RT.

On Monday, Al-Abdah emphasized the importance of the Syrian Arab Republic sustaining a positive relationship with Russia during his conversation with RT International. He remarked that this relationship should be grounded in mutual respect and the interests of both the Russian and Syrian people.

Established in 2015 under UN auspices, the Syrian Negotiation Commission (SNC) oversees negotiations between the Syrian government in Damascus and various opposition factions.

On Sunday, a coalition of opposition groups, including the jihadist faction Hayat Tahrir-al-Sham and the US-backed Free Syrian Army, captured control of Damascus following a rapid military advance. In the wake of this development, the Syrian Army withdrew, and ex-President Bashar Assad, alongside his family, has sought asylum in Russia.

Addressing the future of Syria-Russia relations, Al-Abdah stated, “We should aim for good relations with Russia based on the mutual interest of Russian people and Syrian people, the Russian state and the Syrian state.” He stressed that the mutual future of both nations should be a key factor in shaping their future interactions.

Al-Abdah, who served as the president of the Syrian Interim Government from 2019 to 2021, asserted, “I believe this is very important,” and pointed out that “Syria needs all the help in this world.” He highlighted the dire situation in Syria, where over half of the population is displaced or living as refugees, with 80% of Homs devastated and much of the country's infrastructure in ruins.

“We are in the business of maximizing the number of our friends and minimizing the number of our enemies,” he remarked, underlining that “Russia is a very important player in this world regionally and internationally.”

Al-Abdah concluded by noting there are numerous paths for both nations to explore to foster and enhance their relationship.

Following the overthrow of Assad's government, the militant groups have expressed their intentions to respect Russia’s military bases and diplomatic missions in Syria, as reported by a Kremlin source to TASS on Sunday.

Russian military forces maintain a presence in Syria at the Khmeimim Air Base and a logistics support center in Tartus, situated along the Mediterranean coast in the western part of the country. In 2017, an agreement was established between Moscow and Damascus allowing Russian troops to remain at these bases for 49 years.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov commented on the recent developments in Syria, stating they caught both the world and Russia by surprise. He added that it would require time before Moscow can enter into “serious conversations with those who hold power.”
