The newly established Syrian authorities have appealed to the international community for assistance in halting Israeli strikes, according to Abu Mohammed al-Julani, the leader of the Hayat Tahrir-al-Sham (HTS) jihadist group.
In an interview on Saturday with the Istanbul-based Syria TV channel, Ahmad al-Sharaa, known by his nom de guerre, addressed Israeli activities for the first time since taking control of the country. HTS, in collaboration with other militant factions, initiated an offensive against Syrian military forces in November, successfully capturing significant cities and progressing towards Damascus. Following the disintegration of the Syrian army, former President Bashar Assad fled to Russia, where he was granted asylum.
Al-Julani remarked that “the Israeli arguments have become flimsy” and asserted that they “do not justify their recent violations.” He emphasized that West Jerusalem has “crossed the lines of engagement” in Syria, presenting a potential catalyst for escalating tensions in the region.
Earlier in the week, Israel conducted a significant operation, reportedly targeting weapons depots and naval assets associated with Assad’s forces before armed opposition groups took control. Israeli troops have also maintained their presence in the UN-patrolled buffer zone separating Israel and Syria, characterizing this area as a temporary “sterile defense zone” in southern Syria to mitigate any “terrorist threat.” During a discussion with Channel 4 on Wednesday, an HTS spokesman refrained from directly condemning the Israeli strikes, instead expressing that the group desires “everyone” to respect the sovereignty of “the new Syria.”
In light of the current situation, Al-Julani called for the international community to step in and “assume its responsibilities towards this escalation,” contending that lasting security and stability can only be achieved through “diplomatic solutions” and not through “ill-considered” military actions.
