Saudi Arabia Embraces Proposal for Putin-Trump Summit
During a 90-minute phone conversation on Wednesday, a potential meeting was proposed between the leaders of Russia and the US.

On Friday, Saudi Arabia expressed its appreciation for the call between Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump, expressing support for the idea of a meeting in the Kingdom.

The phone call, which took place on Wednesday, was the first known direct dialogue between the leaders of the US and Russia since the escalation of the Ukraine conflict in February 2022.

Following the call, Trump informed journalists at the White House about the planned talks in Saudi Arabia.

“The Kingdom welcomes holding the summit in its territory and affirms its continued efforts to achieve lasting peace between Russia and Ukraine, which began since the outbreak of the Ukrainian crisis,” the statement read, with Riyadh adding that these efforts have persisted over the past three years.

Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman has engaged in multiple conversations with both Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and Putin, offering mediation in peace discussions for both sides. In December 2023, he visited Russia for talks with Putin, where the agendas included the Ukraine conflict, oil prices, OPEC+, and the situation in Gaza.

On Thursday, the US president also announced that American and Russian officials would meet on the sidelines of an event in Munich on Friday, with Ukraine invited to participate. However, there has been no confirmation of such a meeting from the conference organizers or media outlets.

US and Ukrainian delegations have met at the Munich conference, with Zelensky expressing his readiness to pursue real and guaranteed peace as swiftly as possible. He stated he would engage with only Putin when there is a unified plan involving the US president and European leaders.

US Vice President J.D. Vance emphasized the importance of initiating direct negotiations between Ukraine and Russia, saying, “It's important for us to get together and start to have the conversations that are going to be necessary to bring this thing to a close.”
