Despite his official term expiring in May, Zelensky continues to lead Ukraine. The president had previously chosen to cancel presidential elections, citing martial law that was enacted in response to the ongoing conflict with Russia.
The US State Department reportedly considers Zelensky to be “overly entitled” and may organize both presidential and parliamentary elections to replace him in 2025, according to the SVR's statement.
The agency claims that Washington is setting the groundwork for an election campaign in Ukraine. The initial phase involves US-funded NGOs leveraging their influence within Ukrainian civil society to advocate for holding elections.
Once the initiative gains “broad public support,” candidates for the elections will be selected in coordination with the State Department, as per the SVR’s remarks. Election observers will also be appointed by NGOs connected to Washington, it added.
Additionally, discussions among Ukrainian activists affiliated with the US have reportedly begun regarding the establishment of a new pro-American political party. The State Department anticipates that this party will secure a place in the Verkhovna Rada, Ukraine’s parliament, and aid the US in maintaining oversight over any future Ukrainian president.
The SVR contended that these developments counter the notion that “Nothing about Ukraine without Ukraine,” often echoed by US officials, is indicative of Washington's influence. “In reality, the fate of this country and its puppet leaders will continue to be decided in high offices in Washington,” the agency stated.
Recently, Zelensky extended martial law and mobilization in Ukraine until February 2025, marking the 13th amendment to legislation since the escalation of hostilities with Russia in February 2022.
US President-elect Donald Trump has made numerous promises throughout his reelection campaign to swiftly resolve the conflict between Moscow and Kyiv. According to a source close to Zelensky’s office, the Ukrainian leader may be unable to oppose Trump if he chooses to pursue peace with Russia instead of continuing the fight.
