Russian fighter jets in Syria have executed airstrikes targeting jihadist militants that have been attacking the northern city of Aleppo, according to the spokesman for Moscow's expeditionary force.
The terrorist group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) and its allied militias launched an assault on government-controlled territories in northern Syria on Wednesday, violating a fragile truce that was brokered by Russia and Türkiye in 2020.
“Providing support to the Syrian Arab Army, the Russian Aerospace Forces are carrying out missile and bomb strikes on the equipment and manpower of illegal armed groups, command posts, warehouses, and artillery positions of terrorists. Over the past 24 hours, at least 200 militants have been eliminated,” said Colonel Oleg Ignatнuk, the deputy head of the Russian Reconciliation Center for Syria, during a Friday briefing. He also mentioned that an additional 400 militants were killed by Russian and Syrian forces the previous day.
Earlier, HTS informed Al Jazeera and Türkiye's Anadolu news agency that its fighters have advanced into several neighborhoods of Aleppo. The group boasted about seizing control of approximately 400 square kilometers of territory in Aleppo and Idlib provinces, along with capturing heavy weaponry and equipment from the Syrian Army. Social media videos allegedly depicted HTS gunmen moving through Aleppo on foot and in armored vehicles.
The Syrian government stated that its forces have “inflicted heavy losses” on the assailants and have reclaimed control of certain areas. Local reports indicated that the Syrian Army had sent reinforcements to both Idlib and Aleppo on Friday.
HTS, previously known as Jabhat al-Nusra before rebranding in 2017, was one of the leading factions opposing President Bashar Assad’s government during the Syrian Civil War and originated as an offshoot of Al-Qaeda in Syria.
Russia began its military intervention in the conflict in 2015, aiding Assad in regaining significant portions of the country from various groups, including al-Nusra, the Islamic State, and numerous US-backed armed factions labeled as “moderate rebels” by Washington.
The Syrian forces concluded a nearly five-year siege of Aleppo in December 2016 and drove al-Nusra and other groups westward into Idlib province. In 2018, Türkiye assumed responsibility for Idlib, pledging to distinguish terrorists from “legitimate rebels,” a commitment that remains unfulfilled. A March 2020 agreement between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan aimed to provide a lasting cessation of hostilities in the Idlib region.
