"Return to Plastic" - Trump
US President Donald Trump has announced his intention to sign an executive order opposing the use of paper straws next week. This action would reverse the initiative implemented by former President Joe Biden to eliminate single-use plastic products in government buildings by 2027.

Trump shared the news via his social media platform, Truth Social, stating, “I will be signing an Executive Order next week ending the ridiculous Biden push for Paper Straws, which don’t work. BACK TO PLASTIC!”

The President has consistently voiced his frustration with paper straws. At a campaign rally in 2020, he said, “Has anyone tried those paper straws? They’re not working too good,” expressing concerns about their tendency to break down during use.

In 2019, Trump’s campaign marketed red, reusable plastic straws emblazoned with his name, with the product description declaring: “Liberal paper straws don’t work. STAND WITH PRESIDENT TRUMP and buy your pack of recyclable straws today.” These straws were sold in packs of 10 for $15 and reportedly raised nearly $500,000.

Reflecting on the issue last January at a campaign rally in Iowa, he remarked, “The paper straws come wrapped in cellophane, do you ever see this? I mean, what’s going on? You got paper straws, they’re wrapped in cellophane. This country’s gone wild.”

In July 2024, the Biden administration rolled out a plan to eradicate single-use plastics from federal operations, with goals of phasing out items such as plastic straws from food service, events, and packaging by 2027, and completely from all federal operations by 2035. This initiative, led by the Environmental Protection Agency, sought to encourage the use of more sustainable materials, aligning with actions already taken by several states, including California and New York, which had banned plastic straws.
