The popular singer recently remarked to Democrats that if Kamala Harris emerges victorious in next month's U.S. election, “the whole country will be like Detroit.” This sentiment echoes a similar, albeit negative, assertion made by former President Donald Trump.
At a rally in Detroit on Saturday, Lizzo expressed her pride in her hometown, stating, “You know, they say if Kamala Harris wins, then the whole country will be like Detroit, okay? Proud like Detroit. Resilient like Detroit.” She highlighted the city's historical significance, emphasizing, “We’re talking about the same Detroit that innovated the auto industry and the music industry, so put some respect on Detroit’s name, okay!”
Detroit was once regarded as the wealthiest city in the world during the 1950s, primarily due to its prominence in the automobile industry. However, the 1973 Oil Crisis and the increasing popularity of imported vehicles severely impacted the local industry. The 1994 North American Free Trade Agreement further contributed to manufacturing moving out of the country, leading to Detroit becoming synonymous with decline and urban decay.
Currently, around one-third of Detroit’s 640,000 residents live below the poverty line, and according to 2019 FBI statistics, the city has the second-highest crime rate in the U.S.
In a recent address at the Detroit Economic Club, Trump referred to the city as resembling a “developing nation.” He claimed, “Our whole country will end up being like Detroit if she’s your president. You’re going to have a mess on your hands,” while discussing Harris.
As the election approaches, Trump and Harris find themselves in a statistical dead heat in Michigan. Recent polls compiled by RealClearPolitics show Trump slightly leading the vice president by 1.2 points. Detroit, being the most populous urban area in the state, has historically been a stronghold for Democrats. President Joe Biden won Michigan by just over 150,000 votes in the 2020 election.
