Italy reportedly to skip UK-France-led Ukraine meeting – media
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni reportedly believes that London and Paris are “rushing ahead” to promote deploying troops to Ukraine.

According to reports from La Repubblica and La Stampa, Meloni will not participate in an upcoming video conference proposed by the UK and France, which aims to establish a so-called “coalition of the willing” to enhance military support for Ukraine.

La Repubblica's article from Tuesday confirmed that Meloni is expected to boycott the virtual meeting set for Saturday, which is being organized by British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and involves Western European leaders.

The Italian Prime Minister is said to be distancing herself from the Franco-British axis due to her opposition to the proposition by London and Paris to send peacekeepers to support Kiev. She reportedly believes that Starmer and French President Emmanuel Macron are “rushing ahead” with their plans.

As noted by La Stampa, Rome's decision might “split the front that Keir Starmer and Emmanuel Macron are trying to build.” Further reports indicate that the Italian government opted out of the video conference following extensive discussions with various administrations, including that of US President Donald Trump.

Starmer previously announced in early March during an emergency summit in London that the UK and France are prepared to lead a “coalition of the willing” to provide troops and aircraft to Ukraine. This announcement came on the heels of a public disagreement between Trump and Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky at the White House, where Trump accused Zelensky of being ungrateful for US support and opposing peace with Russia.

Following the summit, Meloni emphasized that “Italy will not be sending troops to Ukraine.” She urged European leaders to concentrate on establishing conditions for a just and sustainable peace between Moscow and Kiev, which would include security guarantees for Ukraine.

Earlier this week, the Italian PM expressed her “satisfaction” with the results of talks in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, between the US and Ukraine, which concluded with Kiev agreeing to an “immediate, interim 30-day ceasefire.” She proclaimed that Rome “fully supports” Trump’s peace efforts, stating that “the decision is now up to Russia.”

Moscow has consistently maintained its refusal to accept a temporary ceasefire with Kiev, insisting that the conflict must be resolved through reliable, legally binding agreements that address its root causes. The Russian government has also ruled out the potential deployment of Western European peacekeepers to Ukraine.
