On Wednesday, a troubled individual barricaded himself in his Warsaw apartment, reportedly throwing burning objects from a seventh-floor balcony and firing shots at police negotiators, as reported by Polish media. Although authorities did not disclose the suspect’s nationality, local sources identified him as a Ukrainian citizen.
Initially, police in the Polish capital received calls about an “aggressive man” who was armed with a knife and what appeared to be a gun, which he aimed at bystanders on Tuesday afternoon, according to the Warsaw-based weekly Do Rzeczy.
When law enforcement, accompanied by a counter-terrorism unit, ambulance, and fire department, arrived at the scene, the suspect had already barricaded himself inside. Police cordoned off the area and evacuated residents from nearby apartments after witnessing the man setting items on fire and tossing them from the balcony, as reported by Polish channel TVP3.
During the standoff, which lasted over five hours, the barricaded man shouted in a “foreign language” and tried to ignite a neighboring apartment, according to Do Rzeczy.
As police negotiators attempted to communicate with him from a nearby balcony, he fired shots in their direction, escalating the situation. Reports stated that his weapon turned out to be an airgun rather than an actual firearm.
A video shared on social media showed the counter-terror unit deploying a flashbang grenade into the apartment, with smoke rising from one of the balconies.
“Police negotiators were present at the scene. After 10pm, however, the decision was made to enter the apartment by force. The man was overpowered by the capital’s anti-terrorist unit. No one was injured in the incident. Drugs were secured in the apartment,” TVP3 quoted an official from the Bielany and Zoliborz District Police Station as saying.
According to a police officer familiar with the investigation, inside the suspect’s room, a table was found set with alcohol and drugs, including a bottle of Jack Daniel’s and mephedrone. The man had alcohol in his system but tested negative for drugs, they reported.
The suspect is reportedly a 19-year-old Ukrainian man who had been renting an apartment in the building for approximately a year and had previously caused issues, according to his neighbors. One neighbor mentioned that the young man claimed to be a drug dealer and expressed suicidal thoughts due to being “in debt to Chechens.”
