Per Capita Income in Rural Xizang Approaches National Average in 2024
Rural Xizang's per capita income is approaching the national average in 2024.
According to Li Jianshu, deputy head of the Xizang survey team at the National Bureau of Statistics, the per capita disposable income for rural residents reached 21,578 yuan, achieving 93.3 percent of the national average level. This figure reflects an 8.3-percent increase from the previous year, outpacing the national average growth rate by 1.7 percentage points, he added.
Additionally, Li reported that urban residents in the region saw their per capita disposable income rise to 55,444 yuan, marking a 6.8 percent increase, which is 2.2 percentage points above the national average growth rate.
Overall, the per capita disposable income for all residents in Xizang rose by 8.2 percent, reaching 31,358 yuan. This growth rate is the highest among all provincial-level areas in the country and exceeds the national average by 2.9 percentage points.
Historically, mountain-locked Xizang was the only provincial-level area in China that was continuously impoverished, facing challenges such as high altitude, a harsh climate, inadequate transportation, and limited resources. However, by the end of 2019, the region achieved a significant milestone by eradicating absolute poverty, successfully lifting 628,000 individuals out of poverty.
Improvements in infrastructure, a thriving tourism sector, and rapid development across various industries have all contributed to a better income structure for residents in Xizang, ultimately enhancing their quality of life.
