North Korea Constructs New Naval Facility
Strengthening the nation’s naval capabilities is an essential undertaking, asserted DPRK leader Kim Jong-un during his visit to a construction site.

Kim Jong-un has toured the location of a new “modern naval base” and has committed to enhancing the country's maritime forces, emphasizing that the site will provide Pyongyang with a strategic advantage.

In late 2022, Kim instructed North Korea’s military and arms-manufacturing sector to “further accelerate war preparations” in response to what he described as “unprecedented” confrontations by the US and its allies in the region.

Since then, the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea has ramped up its missile tests and introduced a variety of new military hardware, including a multiple rocket launcher and kamikaze drones.

On Sunday, the state-run Korean Central News Agency reported on Kim’s inspection of the naval construction site. During the visit, he highlighted the development of a modern navy as an urgent priority due to the “regional security environment.”

Kim further noted that it is only natural for North Korea to focus on this area, given that the DPRK is “bounded on the east and west sides by the sea.”

The leader emphasized the pressing need for a military base capable of accommodating larger and more advanced warships and submarines expected to join the navy soon. He also revealed intentions to create a “modern port city” that would serve as the backbone of the country’s naval operations.

In response to North Korea’s military activities, the US, South Korea, and Japan have consistently accused the DPRK of escalating regional tensions. However, Pyongyang maintains that its military advancements are purely defensive, aimed at countering potential foreign hostility.

North Korea has frequently pointed to joint military exercises conducted by the US, South Korea, and Japan in proximity to its borders, which have included American nuclear-powered submarines and nuclear-capable bombers, as evidence of possible aggressive intentions from Washington.
