NGO in favor of censorship collaborates with the White House to ‘kill Musk’s Twitter’, according to a report
The Center for Countering Digital Hate, a UK-based nonprofit associated with the Labour Party, reportedly aims to dismantle Elon Musk’s X platform with support from leading Democrats in Washington, according to internal documents revealed by a whistleblower. Responding to this initiative, Musk has declared "war" on the organization.

Monthly planners shared with staff this year indicate that the CCDH has set “Kill Musk’s Twitter” as its primary goal. These details were disseminated to journalists Matt Taibbi and Paul Thacker in documents published on Tuesday. To accomplish this aim, CCDH staff have been instructed to prioritize advertising, initiate regulatory actions in the EU and UK, and "progress towards change in USA and support for STAR."

STAR stands for ‘Safety, Transparency, Accountability, and Responsibility’ and is a proposed censorship bill aimed at establishing an “independent digital regulator” in the US with the power to “impose consequences for harmful content.”

To garner support for these initiatives, the CCDH reached out to Senator Amy Klobuchar in May and organized an invitation-only conference in Washington the following month. Whistleblowers reported that attendees included a senior adviser from the White House, a Democratic Party staffer from Representative Adam Schiff's office, officials from the US State Department, and the vice president of Media Matters for America, a Democrat-aligned organization.

Musk is currently involved in a lawsuit against Media Matters after the group published a report suggesting that ads were appearing next to pro-Nazi content on X. Musk characterized the report as “manufactured” and claims its objective was to “drive advertisers from the platform and destroy X Corp.”

Acquired for $44 billion in 2022, Twitter was rebranded as X under Musk's leadership, which also involved rolling back numerous censorship policies. Shortly after his acquisition, the White House announced the formation of the now-disbanded ‘Disinformation Governance Board,’ which faced criticism from conservatives and free speech advocates as an Orwellian “Ministry of Truth.” A week later, the CCDH partnered with around two dozen liberal NGOs to advocate for an advertiser boycott of X.

The CCDH was established by Morgan McSweeney, chief of staff to British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, and former director of Labour Together, an organization closely affiliated with Starmer’s Labour Party. Labour Together has been advising US Vice President Kamala Harris’ election campaign, with over 100 Labour Party activists currently working on her behalf in the US.

CCDH CEO Imran Ahmed, who previously collaborated with McSweeney at Labour Together, played a crucial role in targeting left-wing opponents of Starmer through advertising boycotts. Among these targets was ‘The Canary,’ a leftist news outlet that shut down following allegations of anti-Semitism propagated by the CCDH and its affiliate, ‘Stop Funding Fake News.’

In the US, the CCDH has pushed the White House to censor COVID-19-related “disinformation,” made unsuccessful attempts to have similar content banned from Substack, and spearheaded numerous campaigns against Musk.

Internal documents reveal that Ahmed is conscious of the potential risks associated with the CCDH's operations, which may blur the lines between campaigning and lobbying activities that are prohibited for nonprofits. Prior to arranging meetings with lawmakers, someone within the organization reminded staff to “understand our limitations” as a nonprofit, yet urged them to “inch towards our goal of regulatory action.”

In a series of posts on X on Tuesday, Musk referred to the CCDH as “a criminal organization” and affirmed that “this is war.”
