Israel Specifies Conditions for Peace in Lebanon – Axios
West Jerusalem has reportedly presented Washington with a list of conditions for a diplomatic resolution to the ongoing conflict, as noted by the outlet.

According to Axios, Israel has demanded that the US grant the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) the authority to operate freely in southern Lebanon as a precondition for ending hostilities in the region. This information comes from two Israeli officials and two US officials cited in the report.

The Israeli Prime Minister’s Office allegedly submitted the list of demands to the White House last week, coinciding with the planned visit of US President Joe Biden’s envoy, Amos Hochstein, to Beirut on Monday. Hochstein is anticipated to engage in discussions concerning a diplomatic resolution to the Lebanon conflict.

Israeli officials who communicated with Axios have indicated that the document includes two primary demands. The first is that the IDF be permitted to conduct “active enforcement” to prevent Hezbollah militants from rearming and restoring their military capabilities in southern Lebanon, near the Israeli border. The second condition specifies that the Israeli air force should have the autonomy to operate within Lebanese airspace, according to the report.

One US official conveyed to the outlet that it is highly improbable that Lebanon or the international community would accept these demands, as they conflict with UN Security Council Resolution 1701. This resolution stipulates that a ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon should be overseen by the Lebanese Armed Forces and the UN Interim Force in Lebanon.

Nonetheless, an Israeli official argued to Axios that West Jerusalem’s proposal aims to enhance the enforcement writ of the UN resolution. “Our main message is that if the Lebanese army and UNIFIL do more, the IDF will do less and the other way around,” he stated.

Neither the US nor Israel has issued a comment regarding the Axios report.

In a related development, on Sunday night, the IDF carried out a series of airstrikes across Lebanon, targeting entities connected to the Al Qard Al-Hassan Association—a financial institution that Israel claims is managed by Hezbollah for its monetary operations. Explosions were reported in Beirut, southern Lebanon, and the Bekaa Valley.
