During his visit to a naval base in Haifa on Tuesday, Katz reported that Israeli forces successfully destroyed the Syrian military fleet in an operation carried out on Monday night. This action is part of a broader effort to eliminate strategic threats to Israel.
“The IDF [Israel Defense Forces] has been operating in Syria in recent days to strike and destroy strategic capabilities that threaten the State of Israel,” Katz remarked, labeling the operation on Monday a “great success.”
While he did not provide specific details, Katz indicated that the new zone would “prevent the establishment and organization of terror in Syria” in light of the Syrian opposition forces securing control of Damascus. He emphasized, “We will not allow threats to the state of Israel.”
Israel has initiated strikes in various locations throughout Syria, asserting that these actions aim to stop weapons left by Syrian forces in the demilitarized zone from being acquired by extremist groups. The UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported that Israel has conducted over 300 airstrikes across Syria since Sunday.
“We have no intention of interfering in Syria’s internal affairs, but we clearly intend to do what is necessary to ensure our security,” noted Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
The impetus for Israel's military operations in Syria arose after opposition forces, led by the jihadist group Hayat Tahrir-al-Sham, mounted a surprise offensive against the Syrian government, resulting in the swift collapse of President Assad’s regime and his subsequent exile to Russia.
The Israeli military has taken steps to secure the buffer zone established by the 1974 disengagement agreement, which is located near the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights. Foreign Minister Gideon Saar described the incursion as a “temporary step” designed solely for security purposes.
Nonetheless, Netanyahu asserted Israel's intention to maintain complete control over the Golan Heights, which has been under Israeli occupation since the 1967 Six-Day War, stating that the area is “an inseparable part” of the country.
The United States has supported Israel’s military actions in Syria, labeling them as self-defense, while the UN has stated that these operations violate the disengagement agreement.
